Why Removing Triggers Wasn’t Enough to Heal Calvin’s Eczema

Learn how Christine stopped chasing triggers and uncovered the deeper root causes driving Calvin’s eczema.

Many parents believe there must be one trigger, like a specific food or product, causing their child’s flares. And if they can just identify and remove that trigger, their eczema will finally go away.

But for many children like Calvin, eczema is much more layered and complex than that. Calvin’s story is a good reminder of why understanding the differences between triggers and root causes is so important for healing eczema long-term.

Calvin’s eczema healing journey

Calvin had always been a sensitive baby.

Even as a newborn, his mom Christine noticed his cheeks were often irritated and rashy. He reacted strongly to fabrics and seemed more sensitive than her other children. And when he turned three months old, his irritated skin became worse.

What began as red cheeks turned into severe head-to-toe eczema. He went from sleeping 6-7 hours a night to hardly sleeping at all. Christine also noticed other symptoms that seemed connected to his skin. His stools became full of mucus, and he had recurring staph infections that became crusty, oozy, and difficult to heal.

Searching for Calvin’s eczema triggers

Like many moms navigating eczema, Christine began trying everything she could to support Calvin’s health.

Because she was breastfeeding, she removed dairy, gluten, soy, and several other foods from her own diet. She bought countless creams and lotions recommended by doctors, friends, and online eczema groups. She experimented with probiotics and other holistic recommendations she came across online, but many of them only seemed to make Calvin’s flares worse.

By this point, Calvin had gone through eight rounds of antibiotic creams for recurring staph infections.

Every eczema group seemed to recommend a different cream, a different supplement, or a different elimination diet. But the more Christine searched for that one missing trigger, the more discouraged and overwhelmed she became.

That’s when Christine found one of my videos inside the Holistic Warriors Facebook group explaining the root causes of eczema. For the first time, she realized that Calvin’s eczema wasn’t caused by a single trigger. Instead, there were multiple root causes creating inflammation in his body.

“I thought I needed to find the right food that was bothering him, or the right cream, or the right whatever and cut it out. But for him, it wasn’t just one thing.”

Eczema triggers versus root causes

If you want to truly understand what’s causing your eczema, you have to understand the difference between eczema triggers and root causes.

Eczema triggers are things in your environment that provoke a flare. Eczema root causes are the underlying imbalances in the body that cause your immune system to react.

Foods, environmental allergens, harsh skincare products, infections, or stress can all act as triggers. Removing those triggers can absolutely help reduce inflammation temporarily, and in many cases, it’s an important first step.

But if you're only focused on removing triggers without addressing the root causes, several things tend to happen:

  • New triggers appear out of nowhere.

  • Flare ups become more unpredictable.

  • Your diet and lifestyle are too restrictive to maintain.

And what’s worse, you feel discouraged because you’re doing everything right, but the eczema still isn't resolving. That’s why many families feel like they are constantly chasing one trigger after another. They remove one food, only for another trigger to appear somewhere else.

That was exactly what was happening with Calvin.

Uncovering Calvin’s deeper root causes

Once Christine joined the Ex-zema™ Coaching Program, we started looking beyond surface-level triggers and investigating the deeper imbalances causing his eczema.

Through functional testing and a detailed health history, we uncovered several major factors affecting Calvin’s immune system, including nutrient deficiencies, gut dysbiosis, chronic immune activation, and hidden mold exposure.

At first, mold wasn’t something Christine had considered.

But as we continued connecting the dots, she realized that Calvin wasn’t the only family member struggling with chronic inflammatory symptoms. Her older child had experienced recurrent ear infections, sinus issues, fevers, and other unexplained health challenges as well.

It also explained why Calvin’s body seemed reactive to nearly everything. In many children, mold creates the perfect environment for eczema to thrive.

The steps we took to help Calvin heal

Once we identified Calvin’s root causes, we created a personalized plan to reduce inflammation and support his immune system. We focused on replenishing nutrient deficiencies, improving his gut health, managing the chronic staph overgrowth on his skin, and reducing his exposure to mold and other major triggers.

Because Calvin’s immune system was so reactive, we introduced supplements and topicals slowly and adjusted his routine based on how his body responded. And gradually, things started to shift.

As inflammation in Calvin’s body decreased, his skin became calmer and less reactive. The infections became easier to manage, and his sleep improved. Calvin also stopped reacting to previous triggers, and could now be around his grandmother’s cat without flaring.

Within eight weeks of working together, Christine estimated Calvin’s eczema had improved by 95%.

The real goal of healing eczema

For Christine, this journey completely changed the way she thinks about eczema healing.

Instead of constantly searching for the next trigger to eliminate, Calvin’s immune system has become more resilient overall. When inflammation decreases internally, the body no longer reacts so intensely to every stressor in the environment.
