How Tackling Hidden Mold Exposure Healed Jolee’s Eczema

Discover how hidden mold exposure was impacting Jolee’s eczema and the steps we took to help her heal.

When it comes to eczema healing, many families focus on food triggers and gut health (both incredibly important!). However, there is one environmental trigger that can have an even bigger impact on the immune system…mold exposure.

Believe it or not, about one third of my Ex-Zema™ clients are dealing with mold exposure, often without realizing it.

Jolee’s story is a powerful example of how hidden mold exposure can contribute to eczema, recurring infections, and immune system dysregulation—and what can happen when those root causes are finally addressed.

Jolee’s eczema healing journey

When Katlin’s daughter Jolee was 13 months old, she went through two back-to-back rounds of antibiotics for a urinary tract infection. A few days later, a small eczema patch appeared behind her knee.

At first, the flare seemed mild. Her pediatrician recommended steroid cream, but Katlin chose to monitor it instead. Over the next few months, however, the eczema slowly spread and became harder to manage.

Meanwhile, Jolee’s immune system continued reacting in other ways. She struggled with recurring ear infections, frequent hives, digestive symptoms, and worsening eczema.

By the end of her first year, Jolee had already been on five rounds of antibiotics.

Like many parents navigating eczema, Katlin was doing everything she could to support her daughter’s health naturally. She ordered a stool test through Tiny Health, removed gluten and dairy from Jolee’s diet, and added probiotics to support her gut.

At first, these changes seemed to help. But after another round of antibiotics for an ear infection, Jolee’s eczema flared worse than ever.

The limitations of a DIY approach

As a fitness and nutrition professional, Katlin already knew a great deal about holistic health. But despite all her knowledge and effort, she felt overwhelmed trying to connect the dots on her own.

Like many parents, she found herself drowning in conflicting information online:

  • Elimination diets

  • Supplement recommendations

  • Topical protocols

  • Gut healing advice

She knew she needed someone who specialized specifically in eczema and immune system dysfunction. After watching one of my other eczema success stories, Katlin scheduled a free evaluation call. Shortly afterward, she officially joined the Ex-zema™ Coaching Program.

The hidden trigger causing Jolee’s eczema

After reviewing Jolee’s health history, I suspected there was something in her environment triggering inflammation. That’s when Katlin mentioned something important: She had noticed signs of possible mold in the basement.

Like many families, Katlin had no idea mold exposure could contribute to eczema. But mold can have a profound impact on the immune system—especially in children whose detoxification systems and gut microbiomes are still developing.

How mold exposure impacts eczema

Mold releases toxic compounds called mycotoxins, which can overwhelm the liver, disrupt the gut microbiome, and increase inflammation throughout the body. Over time, this can increase histamine, weaken the immune system, and damage beneficial gut bacteria. It can also make the body more reactive to foods, infections, and environmental triggers.

Unfortunately, mold is often difficult to detect. It can grow behind walls, under flooring, inside insulation, or in damp crawl spaces—often without visible signs.

When Katlin brought in a mold inspector, our suspicions were confirmed. The insulation in the basement and crawl space under the carport were covered in mold. The areas were professionally remediated, but later that year, the family discovered an even larger issue during a bathroom renovation: hidden mold growing underneath the subfloor from old water damage.

Why healing from mold is so difficult

Once mold exposure becomes chronic, healing eczema becomes significantly more complex. Mold doesn’t just trigger the immune system directly—it can also damage the gut microbiome, making it difficult for the body to tolerate supplements, foods, and other healing protocols.

And this was exactly what we experienced with Jolee.

Her body reacted strongly to many of the protocols we introduced, which meant we had to move slowly and carefully to support her immune system. There were flares, setbacks, infections, and moments when progress felt frustratingly slow. But once the mold exposure was fully addressed, Jolee’s eczema started to shift.

We introduced a new gut protocol and for the first time, her body was finally able to tolerate the supplements positively. Jolee’s skin steadily improved, her immune system became calmer, and her flares became less severe and frequent.

Instead of constantly reacting to everything around her, her body finally had the resources and stability it needed to heal.

What you can learn from Jolee’s story

If there’s one thing Katlin learned through this experience, it’s that eczema is rarely “just a skin condition.” It’s often the body’s way of signaling that something deeper is out of balance. And while healing can feel overwhelming at times, Jolee’s story is proof that progress is possible with the right tools, guidance, and support.

When asked what advice she would give other parents navigating eczema, Katlin shared two important lessons:

Listen to the body: Eczema is often a sign that something deeper is driving inflammation. Ignoring those root causes will just escalate the problem.

Healing isn’t linear: Katlin described Jolee’s healing journey as a rollercoaster: progress, setbacks, then more progress. Complex cases take time, patience, and trust in the healing process.

As Katlin shared:

“The body doesn’t make mistakes. It’s trying to communicate that something is off. You just have to learn how to listen.”

And that’s exactly what a root cause approach is about: creating the right environment for the immune system to calm down, rebalance, and heal.
