When Allergies Aren’t the Root Cause: Julia’s Eczema Healing Story

Discover how reducing inflammation and supporting the immune system helped Julia’s eczema heal naturally.

When most parents think about eczema triggers, they think about things like food allergies, pet dander, or harsh skincare products. And while those things absolutely matter, eczema is rarely caused by just one trigger.

More often, eczema develops when the immune system becomes overwhelmed by multiple layers of inflammation at once. In functional medicine, I call this the “inflammation bucket.”

Julia’s story is a powerful example of what can happen when that bucket overflows—and how supporting the body from the inside out can help calm the immune system long-term.

Julia’s eczema healing journey

When Sydney’s daughter Julia was six months old, she suddenly developed red bumps on her face.

At first, Sydney assumed the rash would go away on its own. But over the next several weeks, it spread from Julia’s face to her neck and eventually across her entire body.

Julia’s pediatrician diagnosed her with atopic dermatitis and prescribed steroid cream. Sydney was told eczema was common in children, there was no real cause, and hopefully Julia would outgrow it someday.

But like many moms navigating eczema, Sydney wasn’t satisfied with that answer.

Just weeks earlier, Julia’s skin had been completely clear. Sydney knew there had to be a reason her daughter’s skin was suddenly reacting this way.

Connecting the dots of Julia’s eczema

As Sydney started paying closer attention to Julia’s symptoms, she noticed an important pattern.

About a month before the eczema started, Sydney’s husband had left for a seven-month deployment. Sydney packed up her three daughters and temporarily moved from Georgia to Nebraska to stay with family, including her cousin’s cat and two dogs.

One day, Sydney took the girls to the zoo for several hours and noticed Julia’s skin started calming down. But the moment they returned home, Julia immediately flared again.

That’s when Sydney began suspecting environmental allergies were playing a role in Julia’s eczema. After ordering allergy testing, her suspicions were confirmed: Julia had a mild allergy to pet dander and a noticeable allergy to eggs.

Sydney moved back to Nebraska to get Julia away from the pet dander and started making other changes:

  • Eliminating eggs

  • Cutting out gluten and dairy

  • Supporting Julia’s gut with probiotics

And while those changes helped reduce some inflammation, Julia’s eczema still wasn’t fully resolving.

Understanding the real reason for Julia’s eczema

To me, Julia’s eczema was a classic case of an overflowing inflammation bucket. There wasn’t just one thing causing it to overflow (like allergies). There were a series of triggers and events that we needed to address and remove.

When the body experiences ongoing stress—whether physical, emotional, or environmental—it increases inflammatory signaling throughout the body. This makes the body more reactive to allergens, foods, and environmental triggers. And for sensitive children like Julia, that inflammatory reaction often shows up on the skin.

Supporting Julia’s immune system from the inside out

After reviewing Julia’s health history and running stool testing, we uncovered signs of gut dysbiosis and suspected candida overgrowth contributing to her inflammation. Because Sydney was breastfeeding, we took a very gentle approach to supporting both mom and baby.

Here are some of the steps we used throughout Julia’s healing journey:

Nervous system support:

The stress of her husband’s deployment impacted both Sydney and Julia’s health. We worked on creating a less stressful environment for Sydney’s family until her husband returned home.

Gut healing:

We used gentle probiotics and targeted gut support to rebalance both Sydney and Julia’s microbiomes and reduce inflammation.

Targeted Supplementation:

Julia was extremely sensitive to supplements in the beginning, so we introduced nutrients like vitamin D and zinc slowly and one at a time to make sure her body could tolerate them.

Retesting:

As Julia’s symptoms improved, we completed additional gut testing to address lingering imbalances and continue strengthening her immune system long-term. That way, Sydney could feel confident that Julia’s eczema wouldn’t return. And if it ever did, she’d have the tools she needed to reduce her flares fast.

Lessons from Julia’s story

Julia’s healing journey wasn’t perfectly smooth. In the beginning, she reacted to many of the supplements we introduced. This meant we had to carefully adjust protocols based on what her body could tolerate. There were still flares throughout the process, but over time, her flares became less severe, less frequent, and much shorter in duration

Instead of weeks-long flares across her entire body, she would experience only small patches that resolved within days. And after six months inside the Ex-zema™ Coaching Program, Julia’s skin was dramatically calmer and more resilient.

When I asked Sydney if there was anything she’d like to share with other parents on this journey, she said:

“All the sacrifices we’ve made over the last few months have been worth it. This isn’t just about healing her skin—it’s about setting her up for better health for the rest of her life. The work you do is so incredible, and I’m so thankful to have worked with you. Healing is possible. It may take a long time, but in the end it’s completely worth it.”

And that’s exactly the goal of a functional medicine approach. The goal isn’t to suppress symptoms or avoid triggers forever. It’s to help the immune system become more resilient, less reactive, and better regulated over time. Because when you reduce inflammation internally, the body no longer reacts so strongly to every stressor in the environment. That’s what true healing is about.
