Uncovering the Root Causes of Jayleigh’s Eczema

Discover how food sensitivities and gut imbalances were driving Jayleigh’s eczema—and the steps we took to heal her skin.

Let’s face it—it can be tough to stay motivated and optimistic when you’re in the thick of your eczema healing journey. That’s why it can be helpful to hear other people’s experiences healing their eczema to remind you that natural healing is possible. Today, I want to share one of those stories to encourage you to keep working towards a natural solution to your eczema.

This is Jayleigh’s story:

Jayleigh struggled with mild eczema since she was a baby, but when she turned two, her eczema got worse. Her parents took her to a pediatrician, who gave them a bottle of Aveeno lotion and sent them on their way.

The lotion didn’t provide any lasting relief, so they took Jayleigh to an allergist. Her skin prick test came back negative, so the allergist gave them a steroid cream and told them to check back in six months.

Six months later, Jayleigh’s skin was doing better. The steroid cream seemed to be working, so Jayleigh’s mom, Jenna, stopped using it thinking everything was fine. But then, Jayleigh’s eczema returned with a vengeance, covering her elbows, knees, ankles, face, and entire back.

The dermatologist prescribed Jayleigh more steroid cream, but Jenna wasn't confident about using it long-term. She decided to work with a local functional nutrition doctor instead, hoping she’d provide more personal and holistic guidance.

Unfortunately, Jenna’s experience was less than ideal. The functional nutrition doctor only spent a few minutes asking Jenna questions about Jayliegh’s eczema, and didn’t provide the personal support they needed.

Jenna decided she needed to work with someone who specialized in treating eczema (especially in young children), and joined the Ex-zema™ Coaching Program.

“Julia took the time to learn about Jayleigh’s situation, and put together a plan. I felt relieved that someone could finally explain to us what was going on.”

How we helped Jayleigh uncover her root causes

Jenna and I quickly got to work assessing Jayleigh’s health history and here’s what we discovered:

Jayleigh was struggling with multiple food allergies, food sensitivities, and gut dysbiosis (specifically, a lack of good bacteria in the gut). This led to an overgrowth of bad gut bacteria that was disrupting Jayleigh’s immune system and causing her eczema to flare.

We started Jayleigh’s healing journey by removing her food triggers, addressing her nutrient deficiencies, and increasing the good bacteria in her gut.

We also provided Jayleigh with a personalized holistic skin regimen for quick relief from her flares while she healed her gut. The regimen included lots of dead sea salt baths, hypochlorous acid spray and ozonated hemp oil. After just 6 weeks of following the skin regimen, Jayliegh’s face cleared up.

And a few months after following the gut healing protocol we put in place for Jayleigh, her eczema started healing from the inside out:

“I used to worry about Jayleigh playing alone in her room. But since she’s not scratching during the day anymore, she can do that now. We’re just really grateful.”

Key takeaways from Jayleigh’s eczema story

The importance of personalized care: It’s important to find a practitioner who has experience treating eczema and can provide personalized support. In my experience, a seven minute conversation in the doctor’s office is unfortunately not enough to assess your unique root causes.

Holistic topicals are key: While I wish I could speed up the healing process, it often takes 3-6 months to heal eczema long-term. Having holistic topical options on hand while you heal is key for reducing flares, and staying on course.

Retest if possible: While Jayleigh’s eczema cleared 6 months after working together, she still had a few small patches on her hands and feet. This is why I’m a big fan of retesting when possible, so you can continue to analyze things like nutrient levels and gut health long-term.
