Histamine and Eczema: How Ellie Cleared Her Skin in Less Than 3 Months

Discover how we addressed histamine overload and gut imbalances to help little Ellie clear her eczema in less than 3 months.

Histamine is one of the most misunderstood topics in the eczema world.

Many families are told to remove high-histamine foods to reduce flares—but very few are told why histamine is a problem in the first place, or how to address it long-term.

Ellie’s story is a good example of what happens when you move beyond symptom management and start addressing the deeper root causes driving eczema.

Ellie’s eczema appeared when she was just 2 months old. It started on her face, and slowly spread to her arms, back, legs, and stomach.

Danielle, Ellie’s mom, also noticed that Ellie was highly reactive to food once they introduced solids. She was eventually diagnosed with allergies to eggs and peanuts.

Ellie’s doctor prescribed steroids, but Danielle was hesitant to use them and wanted to take a more holistic approach. She decided to join the Holistic Eczema Warriors community and start researching how other parents were using functional medicine to heal their children' s eczema.

Danielle had already worked with other naturopaths, but their approach wasn’t specific to eczema. She knew she needed someone who truly understood the condition and could guide her step-by-step, especially as she did more research and realized how complex the healing process could be.

After watching a few eczema success stories from other parents inside the community, and learning about my background as both a German MD and functional medicine practitioner, Danielle decided to join the Ex-zema™ Coaching Program.

Uncovering the Root Cause of Ellie’s Eczema

One of the first things I noticed about Ellie’s health history was how reactive she was—especially to food. This level of reactivity is often a clue that histamine is playing a role.

Histamine is a chemical released by the immune system that contributes to symptoms like itching, redness, and inflammation. While histamine is naturally present in the body, it can cause immune reactions when there is either too much being produced or not enough being cleared. This is often referred to as histamine intolerance or histamine overload.

Histamine overload is common in eczema cases and can be triggered by:

  • Certain high-histamine foods

  • Gut imbalances

  • Infections

  • Toxins

  • Chronic stress

In Ellie’s case, her food reactions and frequent flares suggested that her body was struggling to regulate histamine levels.

The first change we made to improve Ellie’s flares was remove excess histamine from her diet. Within just two months, Danielle noticed a significant improvement—Ellie was less itchy, her flares were less intense, and her skin began to clear.

Why a Low Histamine Diet Isn’t Enough to Heal Eczema

Many practitioners would have stopped here.

But the reality is, a low histamine diet—especially for a growing child—is not sustainable long-term. It can be restrictive, stressful, and doesn’t address the underlying reason histamine is elevated in the first place.

Histamine is rarely the root cause of eczema. Instead, it’s often a symptom of deeper imbalances in the body.

If you don’t address those imbalances, the body will continue to produce or accumulate excess histamine—no matter how many foods you remove.

Instead of relying on a low histamine diet exclusively, there are many steps you can take to reduce histamine naturally, while supporting the deeper imbalances driving excess histamine.

Addressing the Real Cause of Ellie’s Histamine Overload

When we investigated further, we discovered that Ellie had bacteria in her gut that were producing excess histamine. This meant her body wasn’t just reacting to histamine from food—it was creating too much histamine internally.

To address this, we implemented a gentle, root-cause-focused protocol using:

  • Targeted antimicrobials

  • Probiotics

  • natural antihistamines

This approach allowed us to gradually reduce harmful bacteria while supporting Ellie’s immune system and keeping inflammation under control. As her gut health improved, her histamine levels decreased, and her skin improved.

In just three months, her flare-ups became less frequent, less intense, and shorter in duration. Over time, her body became more resilient to both food and environmental triggers.

Beyond Clear Skin

As Ellie continued to heal, Danielle noticed something surprising. Ellie was no longer reacting to foods she had previously been allergic to. Eggs and peanuts, once completely off-limits, no longer caused any symptoms or reactions.

This is a powerful sign that her immune system had become more balanced and less reactive. And if flares ever return, Danielle now has the tools and confidence to address them.

While clearing the skin is often the primary goal for families dealing with eczema, the broader objective is to restore balance within the immune system. This means helping the body:

  • Tolerate a wider variety of foods

  • Respond appropriately to environmental triggers

  • Regulate inflammation more effectively

This is the difference between managing symptoms and supporting long-term healing. By addressing the underlying dynamics of eczema rather than simply avoiding triggers, you can heal your skin long-term

Danielle’s Advice to Other Parents

If Danielle could give advice to other parents navigating eczema, here’s what she’d say:

"Find a practitioner who truly understands eczema. We saw two different naturopaths before joining this program, but their approach wasn’t fully geared toward eczema. Working with someone who specializes in it made all the difference. No matter how severe it seems, there is hope and the body can heal.”
