How Brooklyn Healed Her Gut and Became Eczema Free

Learn the specific gut imbalances driving Brooklyn's eczema, and the steps we took to heal her gut and become eczema free after months of setbacks.

Everyone in the holistic health world talks about gut health, but what does it really mean to heal your gut? Between testing, diet changes, and supplement protocols, gut health can feel pretty confusing. That’s why I like to share stories of Holistic Eczema Warriors just like you who are working with me to identify their gut imbalances and finally become eczema-free.

If you’ve ever wondered what it really takes to heal your gut and finally see your child’s eczema clear, Brooklyn’s story will show you what’s possible.

Brooklyn’s eczema appeared when she was just four months old. Like many parents, Brooklyn’s mom Lauren turned to their pediatrician for help. At first, they were able to manage it with topical steroids, but after a year and a half, the eczema got worse.

It spread all over her legs and Brooklyn would often itch until she bled.

A referral to a pediatric dermatologist led to the same advice Lauren had heard before: more steroids and now, bleach baths.

Shortly after, Brooklyn’s skin flared worse than ever during a family vacation. That was Lauren’s breaking point, and she knew something had to change. Having previously worked with a functional medicine doctor for her own health, Lauren decided to explore a deeper approach for Brooklyn.

When her functional medicine doctor recommended my work, she started watching my videos inside the Holistic Eczema Warriors Facebook group, and shortly after decided to join the Ex-Zema™ Coaching program.

Uncovering Brooklyn’s Root Causes With Functional Testing

To understand what was driving Brooklyn’s eczema, we ran a series of gut health tests.

The results revealed several significant imbalances, including:

  • a Helicobacter overgrowth (a type of harmful gut bacteria)

  • Yeast overgrowth

  • High levels of mycotoxins, likely from mold exposure

Unfortunately, these types of gut imbalances are common in children with eczema and are often influenced by multiple environmental factors.

Why Babies Have Gut Health Issues

When a baby is born, the immune system and the gut microbiome develop side by side. Microbes in the gut help teach the immune system what’s harmful and what’s safe. The majority of these microbes are shaped by age 3, and the first three months are especially important for building that foundation.

If your child has eczema, it’s likely their gut health is struggling for one reason or another. In Brooklyn’s case, these involved:

  • Repeated antibiotic use from frequent ear infections

  • Low-level mold exposure

  • Limited sunlight during the winter months

  • Lauren’s gut health during pregnancy (since we inherit our parents’ microbiome)

Here are a few other common reasons babies with eczema struggle with gut health issues:

With this new understanding, we created a personalized gut healing protocol to support Brooklyn’s body from the inside out. But this is where things got more challenging.

When Healing Isn’t Linear

Because Brooklyn’s gut was so inflamed, she reacted to nearly every protocol we introduced. This meant Lauren had to move slowly—introducing foods and supplements in very small doses. Progress was steady, but slow.

Brooklyn spent most of the summer in long pants to cover her flares, as she was reacting to topical treatments as well.

But then, about seven months into the Ex-zema™ Coaching Program, everything shifted.

Lauren and Brooklyn’s hard work finally paid off. Brooklyn’s eczema completely cleared and hasn’t returned since. We even re-tested her gut to confirm that the root imbalances had been resolved.

Healing Eczema is Means More Than Clear Skin

It was a long journey for Brooklyn and her family, but seeing her skin clear made it all worth it.

After her eczema cleared, Lauren was finally able to give Brooklyn a normal summer—filled with swimming, beach days, and lots of new memories. She can now take Brooklyn to restaurants, try new foods, and enjoy everyday life without constant fear of flares.

Here are a few powerful lessons we can all learn from Brooklyn’s story:

  • Testing (and retesting) is key to addressing root causes long-term

  • Healing is nuanced and personal—there is no one-size-fits-all protocol

  • There is no perfect timeline for healing

When I asked Lauren what she would share with other parents navigating eczema, she said:

“If you feel like something isn't right, do yourself a service and dig deeper. You can take the easy way out and go with what your insurance covers, but if things aren’t adding up, research and make informed choices. You are your biggest advocate.”
